2009 VPL Final - Dandenong Thunder Vs Altona Magic. A Shattering End to a Brilliant Season

Altona Magic - 5 defeated Dandenong Thunder - 4 (Penalty Shoot-out)

The dreaded penalty shoot-out scenario ended Dandenong's dream season in the most spirit crushing of fashions.

While the match was a fair and level battle all the way through, there can only be one winner and luck on the day favored Altona who were given a heaven sent penalty kick in the second half which leveled the match: 1-1 after a brilliant goal once again from captain Veton "Vets" Korcarevski whos clever first half header off a deflection put "Prishtina" in the lead and tasting glory much to the ecstatic delight of the faithful Thunder fans and fanatics.

With the bulk of the crowd at Bob Jane Stadium soaking in the surprisingly hot weather whilst delirious with joy, waiving their Albanian Flags and screaming at the top of their lungs almost begging to the powers that be for a wonderus victory for the small but very passionate club formerly known as Dandenong South Prishtina. It wasn't to be. The game went into sudden death extra-time and inevitably to penalty kicks.

With Club legend Fadil Muriqi, (Father of up and coming young star, Rini Muriqi) looking-on behind the goals, the penalty shoot-out commenced and ended in a bitter result for Thunder.

While it is pointless and unfair to blame Thunders most experienced players, midfielder Marcus "Sterj" Stergopolous and defender Levent "Lev" Osman for missing both of Thunders penalties and ultimately alowing Altona to clinch the title for the second consecrative time, it is important to note the irony that these two players have been without a doubt the back bone of Dandenong's success all season. I'm sure all fans and staff at the club acknowledge that fact and are by no means pointing fingers at anyone but are in retrospect greatfull for what was achieved in season 2009.

Dandenong Thunder Disposed of Hume City today once and for all in what was a very entertaining game.

The Opening goal was scored by Captain and home grown hero Veton "Vets" Korcarevski with a classy header which opened up the game for Thunder. From this point Hume City had no chance with the confidence and skill of Dandenong combining with the support from a huge crowd of Thunder's faithful.

Thunder Play Altona Magic in the Grand Final. Congratulations again to the players and coaching staff for the remarkable job of getting the club from state league 1 to the grand final of the premier league. Win or lose in the final, Thunder are still champions.

A Landmark game is scheduled with one of our arch enemies in Preston Macedonia (Lions) in which will see Dandenong Thunder clinch the minor premiership for season 2009. An achievement to be proud of for everyone involved with the club.

Dandenong Thunder Destroy Green Gully Cavaliers 5 - 1

Thunder has rebounded back with courage after a shock 3-0 loss to Hume city in the previous week. With the addition of key midfielder Marcus Stergiopoulos who was back from suspension, forward Veton Korcarevski and defender Aaron Wilford, Thunder manged to drill 5 goals passed Cavaliers keeper Steven Tilovski who if not for some miraculous saves would have blown the margin out to at least a 6 goals.

Domination of quality opposition like Green Gully is rare in professional soccer leagues. There was speculation by the "Presenters" of the Green Gully TV show on C31 that the abandoned game they played against Thunder in round 14 was deliberately postponed on the account that the Cavaliers were on the verge of ripping Thunder to pieces in the second half and so someone in the club panicked, then switched the stadium lights off. What an absurd thing to suggest.

Dandenong Thunder host Sunshine George Cross next week.

Thunder Lose Their First Game of 2009

Result 3-0 loss

A f**king filthy Hume city pitch, that was full of pot holes and weed patches was the staging ground for Dandenong Thunder's first defeat of 2009 and the end of it's 16 game undefeated streak.

The allocated referee for the day "Louie" is a disgrace to the human race and civilization. Again and again this weasel awarded Hume city with free kicks that even a netball referee wouldn't give and not only that he gave yellow cards to our boys for the softest of challenges.

It's fair to say that Thunder was going to be defeated eventually this year, but in this fashion is unacceptable. The ground was unacceptable. The Referee was beyond unacceptability.

The Hume city soccer club however were great hosts. They played very well but I don't think they deserved to win. To much Free kicks and leniency was awarded to them while thunder was penalized for 90% of all challenges on and even off the ball. It almost seemed as if the match had been fixed.

Adelaide United vie for Aaron Wilford

MELBOURNE Victory has said it will look to the Victorian Premier League to sign a central defensive replacement for the injured Steven Pace — but Adelaide United could get in ahead of the champion to nab one of the best centre backs in the state competition.

The Reds are trialling Dandenong Thunder defender Aaron Wilford, a 27-year-old Englishman who spent three years on the books of former Premier League side Middlesbrough.

Wilford came to Australia last season and was signed for the VPL leaders by new coach Stuart Munro at the start of this campaign.

Wilford and his young teammate Jack Hingert were both due to play in a trial match in Adelaide for the Reds against the Metrostars.

Green Gully Cavaliers are currently 5th on the Ladder. Last time We met it was a 0-0 draw at their home ground up in the sticks. I haven't watched Green Gully play in about 8 years. They've always been one of the Premier League's top sides and they've won the championship a half dozen times. Doesn't mean shit this year though. Result: 0-0 (Game Abandoned due to blackout)

The star forward is currently the leagues second leading goalscorer. First being Osagie Ederaro from Heidelberg.

Together with fellow forward Veton Korcarevski and wingman Hamlet Armenian, the trio blitz opposition defenses in counter attacks week after week.

Round eleven saw thunder draw with Melbourne Knights at Mansion Stadium 2-2, with Joey booting the pair for Dandy including the last minute goal to level the match. Joey's attacking speed and ability to carve through defenses make him a valuable asset for the club.

There a good side to say the least, currently in 9 position on the ladder. They in my opinion have been a little unlucky all season. Thunder defeated them in round 2: 1-0, but I think this weeks coming home game would be interesting. Dandenong is coming back from a disappointing draw with Hellas (disappointing in the sense that it was 2-0 with 14 minutes to full time) and the Cannons defeated Heidelberg 2-1, so the squad dynamic would have changed somewhat. I think we might see our first defeat unfortunately, but it will be close. Final Result: 2-2

Dandenong Thunder Vs South Melbourne 23/05/09

Result: draw 2-2

One of the best soccer games of the season.

A massive crowd turned up to watch Dandenong Thunder play South Melbourne Hellas at George Andrews Reserve.

The Thunder led the game 1-0 at half time and made it 2-0 right after the break. Then with 14 minutes left, and the hellas fans quite as mice, an unprofessional goalkeeping error by Stuart Webster led to a scrambled goal and then to unfortunately another minutes later leaving all thunder supporters gob smacked.

Hellas were very lucky on the day and to think they were thrilled with a draw against a club like Dandenong just goes to show what a powerhouse Thunder has become.

As most might know, South Melbourne Hellas were in the previous Australian national league (N.S.L). They have also played Manchester UTD in exhibition match and the clubs long successful history dates back to the 1950's.
